Kim Kardashian’s style used to receive very high marks on both the red carpet and out on the town, but since she began toting around her very large pregnant belly as an additional accessory, her outfits became questionable, at best (we’re still having a tough time getting the shot of her painfully swollen feet stuffed into her strappy high-heeled sandals out of our heads). Not to be outdone by herself, a photo shoot for CR Fashion Book’s third issue, styled and shot by Karl Lagerfeld, features Kim back in May taking her baby bump fashion to a whole new level. There’s just one thing we want to know: Are these shots totally artistic, or just too much?
Lagerfeld is, without a doubt, a giant in the world of fashion, acting as the creative director for Chanel and Fendi, as well as heading up his own eponymous clothing line. Not only does he photograph his own lines, he also does other editorial work, including for Harper’s Bazaar. His shots are usually black and white, as it seems to be his favorite method, but he does do some color photography. Kim’s shoot was a mix of both.
The publication first teased the issue’s cover girl with an image of a figure wearing a bejeweled Maison Martin Margiela mask. There was some speculation that the model could be Kim, based on her boyfriend Kanye West’s performance in December, 2012, in which he wore the mask during a performance at Revel. Kanye likely saw the masks when they debuted on the runway in July of that year at the fall '12 haute couture presentation of the Maison Martin Margiela collection.
When the mask was finally stripped off today, Kim was revealed, and the shiny diamonds were replaced by the shiny gold of a grill, this season’s go-to fashion statement of the stars. Kim seemed to be blowing a cloud of blue smoke (although we hope for her unborn baby’s sake that this was Photoshopped in later) with her head tilted back to give her grill a perfect sheen.
The rest of the photographs were styled simply, with Kim’s hair in a center part with beachy waves, natural makeup, and a very sexy expression, along with a very prominent pair of pregnancy lips. Kim’s baby bump is featured in only two of the six shots, the most revealing of the two being a bare bump shot while Kim slumps back dressed only in a pair of loose slacks, a bandeau bra, a heavy coat, and a pair of pink gloves. The other features Kim holding her belly in a sweater with an American flag on the chest and a black baseball cap with a black veil flowing over her shoulders.
The most (ahem) interesting shot is also the most colorful. Kim is dressed in a simple white dress with a pink and white checkered blazer and a larger checkered cape over the top, sitting in front of a wall of pastel flowers. Interestingly, she has smeared a jar of jam on her face, making her look like a toddler who got into mommy’s makeup.
We could totally see baby North doing something similar when she’s a bit older, but we could also see her questioning her mother’s rather odd pregnancy shoot, too. I mean, if Karl Lagerfeld told you to smear jam on your face or to wear a gold grill, you would do it because it’s Karl Lagerfeld. But we want to know what you think. Was this shoot was edgy, cool, and super artistic, or weird, confusing, and downright distasteful?
