My mother has always been supportive in whatever it was that I wanted to do. But if I had to think of one thing my mother might be on the fence about, it would be me asking her permission to join the porn industry. In fact, I’m pretty sure she’d fall right off the fence and begin convulsing. That’s not to say that our relationship isn’t strong, it’s just that porn isn’t exactly an “acceptable” career, and as Japanese plus-size porn star Jessica Ketcham says, in the U.S., it’s usually something a person does to spite their parents, not with their blessing.

Jessica was the daughter who asked her mom for permission to join the industry. While she doesn’t describe the interaction much further, she does explain just how different the Japanese culture is when it comes to sexuality.

“Where I came from, sexuality is an accepted part of the culture,” Jessica told Huffington Post. "I was raised to behave like an adult, so even my current tenure in porn is full of me still making decisions”

We just can’t help but imagine what that conversation must have been like with her mother. Accepted or not, porn is still a very risky business full of potential drugs, diseases, and abuse. As Jessica went on to explain, she is able to dictate her career choices to provide for a safer environment for herself.

"I don't do every scene that is asked of me,” she says. “I don't do every sex act that's asked of me. In my case, because I do a lot of plus-size porn, I don't do things that perpetuate a negative stereotype with large women. I've turned down scenes where I've been asked to eat while having sex."

There have been some interesting feedback in the comments below the article on the topic. “I couldn't even look my mom in the eye when I first got my period at age 10,” one commenter said. “I almost died of embarrassment and thought I would be grounded. And she never had the sex talk with me, everything I know I learned from friends, reading and TV. More power to her.”

“Maybe this will show my mom that my asking for a pony was not so unreasonable,” said another.
