We’ve heard of tough love, but a single mom who recently posted a photo of her house rules on Reddit seems to take this concept to extremes.
According to The Stir, the single mom of a high school and college student is going back to school, herself, on top of working. Things are obviously going to be hectic now that school is back in sesh, so she decided to write a few of the ground rules on a whiteboard and then post the pic to the popular social media site.
The memo (or was it a mission statement!?) explains that, due to their hectic schedules, she wants to be clear that there is no “maid, butler, laundress, cook, valet, errand runner, or other employed help here.”
The list goes on to note some of the things they the kids will need to do because they’re old enough now, such as:
Pick up your mess
Do your dishes
Sort and put away your laundry
Yes, you can buy a few groceries
Be a grownup!
I was sort of torn when I read this, as I feel like too many parents these days try to publicly shame their kids on social media sites. Conversely, it seems like she’s trying to pat herself on the back for posting the photo where others can see it. I’m not a big fan of these parenting methods. Then again, I know how annoying it is when everyone piles the dishes in the sink!
I applaud this mother for the clarification of the rules but, then again, if they’re living under her roof, why can’t she pay for the groceries? I can only talk from my point of view, but I take pride in being able to provide for my kids and, while I’m not a single mother, I can only imagine even more kudos would be due for doing so. Of course, I’d really have to know these people and understand them as a family to sit in judgment. Perhaps this has been a long time coming and her kids have been lazy louts!
