If you saw your child on the TV breaking the law, would you turn them in? One Kansas City mother was forced to answer that question after seeing her son on a surveillance video that showed him draw a gun on an 85-year-old military veteran.
According to KCTV5 News, 18-year-old Michael Bray, who police say appeared to be the ringleader of a recent robbery of an elderly man, was joined by nine other teens and young men. During the incident, the elderly man reportedly said he feared for his life so he didn’t resist. On the surveillance video, you can see Bray pull the gun, followed by nine other people joining him at various times to enter the man’s house. Once inside, they stole a rifle, handgun, ammunition, and a smartphone.
When Bray’s mother saw the surveillance video, which had been shown extensively in Kansas City in order to catch the offenders, she recognized her son. She convinced him to turn himself into the Kansas City Police Department’s Center Patrol Station on Friday.
Court documents reveal that Bray, who has no felony convictions, confessed in exchange for a plea deal. In addition to Bray, a 14-year-old was also charged last week. Grandview police continue to search for the other suspects.
Neighbor Shawn Smith commented on how shocked he was to see how young these offenders were. Smith also went on to praise Bray’s mother, whom he called “a “wonderful lady,” for doing the right thing and turning her son into police, saying, "I think that's great. Parents by all means should not uphold their children when they know they are wrong," he said. "I know it's a tough decision to make. You're forced with protecting your child or loving your child and doing what's right. But at the end of the day, you have to do what's right, especially when they violate someone else's sense of privacy and security."
We couldn’t agree more. It must have been a brutally difficult decision for the young mother, but we applaud her for having the will to do so.
