In a story that will make your heart ache for everyone involved, CNN is reporting that a 5-month-old baby died on a baggage carousel at an airport in Alicante, Spain.

There aren’t many details at this point but there is some speculation that the mother, who is American and was reportedly traveling to Spain from London with the baby and an older child, may have set the child down on the baggage carousel in order to reach for something else.

A security officer at the airport told CNN affiliate Atlas that, although she didn’t see the incident, she was told that "the mother apparently put (the baby) down on the conveyer belt when she went to reach for something. He was crushed by the conveyer belt and it killed him."

It wasn’t clear whether the belt, which was used for oversized items like infant car seats and baby strollers, was already moving or had been activated by the weight of the baby carrier.

The mother was reportedly meeting the father, who is Canadian, just outside the airport. They had apparently come to Spain’s Mediterranean coast for a vacation.

Any mother reading this story likely feels this woman’s anguish, as we all know that traveling alone with two small children can be brutally difficult. She was likely exhausted from the trip and had a momentary lapse of judgment and will forever pay for the mistake. Our hearts go out to her and her whole family.
