It was a monumental moment for Cassidy Lynn Campbell and the entire LGBT community when the Huntington Beach, California, high schooler was crowned homecoming queen on Saturday. According to ABC News, this made Cassidy Lynn the first transgendered homecoming queen ever, and she was thrilled! The euphoria was short-lived, however, as the backlash has had more of an impact on her, and she took to YouTube for an emotional explanation.

"It just hurts so bad because I feel just as much of a girl as all of them do," Cassidy, who was still wearing her tiara through her heartfelt tears.

Cassidy, who lived as Lance Campbell up until three years ago, talks about how she’s always felt that she was a girl, and that her family knew from the time that she was three that she was meant to be a girl. She calls those who don’t understand ignorant.

"I am just as much of a human being as they are," she said. "The fact that these other people can say the things they say, and act the way they act, and think the way they think is just inhumane ... This is how I've always been and this is how I've always felt. It's not a choice. This is something I've wanted for so long."

Following the backlash and hate she received, Cassidy said she wonders if it’s even worth it or if she should “just go back to being miserable” as a boy.

Before getting the negative reaction from some, the 16-year-old high schooler cried tears of joy. Having been newly crowned, she told ABC Los Angeles station KABC-TV, “I wasn’t doing this for me. I was doing this for so many others.”

It’s too bad that she couldn’t have held onto this feeling of joy after being crowned. Our hearts go out to Cassidy and we hope she can find the acceptance in her peers that she so badly wants (and deserves!).
