We’ve all seen the horrendous carnage from videos of car accidents involving texting while driving, which makes the thought of your child’s bus driver doing just that all the more terrifying. According to an article in the New York Daily News, this is exactly what happened to mom Venus Cotto-Silva.
The Florida mom’s daughter came home with shocking video she took on her smartphone. The video shows the student's school bus driver with one hand on the wheel, and sending a text on her phone with her other hand.
"When she showed me the video I just couldn't believe it," Cotto-Silva told WFTS-TV during an interview about the incident.
"You're supposed to get them from point A to point B in a safe condition. That's not safe at all," the clearly distraught mother said.
What’s even more scary is, at the end of the video, you can see that the driver had to swerve to get back into her lane.
A Tampa-area district spokesperson said that they have a strict policy against bus drivers using their phones behind the wheel. The woman in question was pulled from her route and, as WFTS-TV reports, she is on desk duty.
What’s really shocking is the state of Florida doesn't have an actual law in place regarding bus drivers who text while driving. However, a state-wide ban on all drivers who text will take effect October 1, 2013.
