News this morning out of New York City’s Riverside Park in the Upper West Side of Manhattan reports that five people were stabbed or slashed just before 8 a.m. while walking in the park, and one of the victims was a 2-year-old child.
According to The New York Times, a mentally disturbed man suddenly took apart a pair of scissors and proceeded to stab and slash pedestrians. One woman is listed in critical condition with a stab wound to her neck and the child was slashed in the arm while he was sitting in a stroller pushed by his father. The father was also stabbed in the chest as he attempted to fend off the attacker.
All five victims are hospitalized at either St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan or Roosevelt Hospital in Midtown and all are expected to survive.
The attacker has been caught and taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
This reminds us of a similar attack that happened just a few blocks away from our office just two weeks ago in Seattle after a Sounder’s soccer game. According to The Seattle Times, a mentally disturbed person who was reportedly unprovoked stabbed a woman and the man who tried to protect her after they left the stadium, killing the man and seriously injuring the woman.
These attacks definitely make us terrified to wander the streets alone, but it seems that even with a friend or a parent walking with a small child, it can be just as dangerous.
How do you feel about the safety in your area? Would you ever expect something like this to happen where you live?
