For Emily Heik, a breast cancer diagnosis was a crushing blow, and the double mastectomy that the 29-year-old had during her year of chemotherapy treatment cannot have been easy.
One would think that with all of that, Emily had quite enough on her plate, but rather than diving into bed with her head under the covers as she had every right to do, this brave soul decided that she wasn’t going to take her prognosis lying down. She picked her own weapon of empowerment, a camera, and started shooting a photo every week to document what she looked like during this trying year, and then put the results into this amazing time-lapse video.
Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’d like to share this powerful video with you. We get to watch Emily as she first loses her hair, and then her breasts, over time. In several shots, she pulls her shirt up to reveal the tubes and pumps of her chemotherapy delivery system. While the video is emotional and jarring, at the end we are rewarded with a healthy-looking Emily looking chic and happy wearing a black outfit and red lipstick.
Emily told Yahoo! that she created the video so that others going through similar treatment wouldn’t be so scared. She said, "For me, the unknown is almost always worse than the reality. My hope is that by showing what it looks like to go through treatment, I can shine a light on a little bit of that unknown."
We are happy to hear that Emily’s cancer is currently in remission, and we applaud her efforts to help others.
