A mother disowning her son for being gay is heartbreaking but what that woman’s father did in rebuttal will make you want to send him a long-distance high-five. The mother must have sent the family a letter, making it clear she considered her son to be a “shame in the family.” Grandpa decided two could play at that game, and wrote a response letter that appeared on the Facebook page of gay-friendly apparel brand FCKH8.

The letter, which Gawker later verified was sent in by the gay son, named Chad, reads as follows (sic throughout):

I'm disappointed in you as a daughter. You're correct that we have a "shame in the family", but mistaken about what it is.

Kicking Chad out of your home simply because he told you he was gay is the real "abomination" here. A parent disowing her child is what goes ‘against nature’.

The only intelligent thing I heard you saying in all this was that "you didn't raise your son to be gay". Of course you didn't. He was born this way and didn't choose it any more than he being left-handed. You however, have made a choice of being hurtful, narrow-minded and backward. So, while we are in the business of [disowning] our children, I think I'll take this moment to say goodbye to you. I now have a fabulous (as the gay put it) grandson to raise, and I don't have time for heartless B-word of a daughter.

I you find your heart, give us a call.

-Dad

Gawker updated their original piece on the letter with a response they got from Luke Montgomery of FCKH8:

“I'm trying to get the teen and his grandpa to come out publicly and do media interviews to spread the word. Right now they are scared and a bit intimidated with all the requests because it seems the kid is not out. I'll forward your contact info to them and work on getting them to speak out because it would be so good for the cause.”

Whether they decide to embrace the public eye and become advocates for the LGBT community or not, what this grandfather did in support of his grandson is totally amazing.

What would you do in this situation?
