According to The Washington Post, a car chase began around 2:20 p.m. EST in Washington, D.C. after an unknown woman driving a black Infiniti with Connecticut plates with a child passenger attempted to breach White House grounds by ramming the vehicle into the barriers surrounding the area. Secret Service officials and area police followed in pursuit.
The woman was reportedly driving erratically in an attempt to evade police officers, police cars, and barricades they were trying to put up in front of her to stop her. At one point in the quick altercation, witness B.J. Campbell from Oregon said officers had successfully barricaded the front of the woman's car when she suddenly "gunned it ... She ran the barricade down and the guy; knocked him up onto her hood. He rolled off into the street, and she tore off down Pennsylvania Avenue.”
During this time, Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill confirmed via Twitter that the Capitol was put on lockdown, which lasted approximately 30 minutes. Tourists, officials, and reporters were told to run, according to a tweet by Luke Russert. Several other witnesses in the area reported gunshots, and from the video, we can confirm that at least seven shots were fired by police officers alone. When asked whether the woman was armed, Texas Representative Michael McCaul told AP, "I don't think she was. There was no return fire."
The chase concluded with one injury to a police officer whose car had been reportedly hit by the woman during the chase, according to CBS News, and the woman driver has been confirmed dead by both CBS News and Fox News. According to AP, Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer confirmed that a child was taken from the car and transported to a nearby hospital and tourist Edmund Ofori-Attah said the child appeared to be about 2 to 3 years old. The child is said to be uninjured.
Most news outlets are clear that this incident has yet to be related to terrorism and is most likely just an isolated event, although no motive has been released.
