Honesty is truly the best policy, especially when you get handsomely rewarded for it. Max Parenti, an 8-year-old from New Hampshire, was on a walk with his dad Guy and the family dog when they stumbled upon a treasure trove: a deposit bag from a bank containing over $1,400 in ten, twenty, and fifty dollar bills. As they discussed what to do with the money, Guy decided to use the occasion as a teaching moment for young Max.
As the independent sales agent explained to Yahoo!, “I think [Max] said, 'Are we going to keep it?' And I said, 'Keeping it is no different from taking it.' He's a great kid with a great heart, so he was all for it. He felt like one of the good guys."
Guy Parenti says he’s completely impressed with Max’s honesty and proud that his son chose to do the right thing. After counting the money, the two turned the cash in together to the local police station, only to find out that it belonged to local children’s shop owner Cheri Smith, who says she dropped the deposit bag on her way to her car one evening.
Smith, touched at Max’s honesty, sent him a thank-you note and a $100 reward. She says, “I grew up in this town and raised my kids here, and it really is the place it is because of people like Max's parents, who used the opportunity to teach him, hey, we could put it in our pockets, but no, we all take care of each other."
Guy Parenti reveals that with his newfound windfall, Max intends to buy Pixi Stix, the powdery candy confection. .
Well done, Max and Guy! This is just what we need on a Friday — a happy story with a sweet ending.
