The disappearance of Madeleine McCann has captured nationwide attention for many reasons, one of which is that the majority of people seem to believe that she is still alive. The little girl, who was three at the time of her abduction in 2007, disappeared from the bed of her family's vacation apartment in Portugal.
Madeleine's parents were initially criticized for having left their children alone in the room while reportedly hanging with friends down the street. There’s no denying, however, that Kate and Gerry McCann have worked tirelessly since then to find out what happened to their little girl.
According to TODAY, they may finally get some answers soon, as Scotland Yard investigators claim that new information they have could be crucial in solving the case. They launched their own investigation earlier this year, as many critics have claimed Portuguese officials failed to pursue many leads before closing their case.
“There is new information not previously presented,” authorities said in a statement. “Fresh, substantive material upon which to make an appeal. It’s substantially different. It’s not just a bland ‘can you help us’ appeal, there is some different material and a different understanding.”
Investigators have been poring over more than 40,000 pages of documents that have led to new leads as well as 41 new people of interest in several countries, including Britain.
One of the things investigators have been examining is records from every cell phone number used in that area at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance. According to the report on Today, there are still thousands of leads to explore.
Kate and Gerry McCann have been very vocal about asking the public’s help in finding their daughter, and they’ll do so again on October 14 when they appear live on a British television show.
