One Coventry, Rhode Island, family has decided to take matters to a higher authority after their 12-year-old son was suspended for three days and banned from a class field trip for having a keychain shaped like a gun in his possession at school.
NBC 10 reports that Joseph Lyssikatos was suspended by school officials when the small toy gun keychain fell out of his backpack. Joseph’s parents are outraged that such a small action would lead to school suspension, and are meeting with the superintendent today to fight the decision.
Although Joseph has already completed his three-day suspension, his parents are hopeful that if the decision is withdrawn, it will also be removed from his permanent file, preserving Joseph’s perfect attendance record. According to Joseph’s father, Keith Bonanno, "I told him last year that perfect attendance and non-lateness is a great character trait. And everyone's looking for that and he was upset to not have that."
Although the suspension was initially going to mean Joseph couldn't attend an upcoming class field trip to Salem, NBC 10 reports that he now will be able to attend with his class later this month, whether the ruling is overturned or not.
