How would you feel if you found out there’s a Facebook group that’s taken your child’s photo, put it online, and made fun of how ugly they are? Infuriated, perhaps? Well, a group of moms recently made this chilling discovery, and they are outraged.
According to Phoenix, Arizona news outlet My Fox Phoenix, members of this so-called “toddler bashing” group stole children’s photos off of other mom’s Facebook pages without permission, posted them to their private Facebook group, and left disparaging comments about the kid’s looks.
While some of the children on the site are actually disabled, and the group’s alleged comments, such as “This is hideous” and “You can’t change ugly” are truly horrible, what really boggles the mind is that the Facebook group is apparently run by adult women, many of them moms themselves.
One victim of the group, mom Ellen Veach, told My Fox Phoenix that she found out about the group when her friend told her that a photo of her 2-year-old daughter was on the group’s page. The horrified mother said, "At first, I was in shock. I couldn't believe it. It was basically just a head shot of one of the pictures I posted in my album and it was next to another picture of a cartoon character…”
Although the site has apparently been taken down, and most of the women involved have disabled their Facebook pages, My Fox Phoenix reports that some of the women behind the site have defended their freedom of speech.
Veach says when she found out what happened, she removed her kid’s photos from her own account and reported the group to Facebook. Her page now says "Stay Strong and Stop Bullying.” While Facebook says they are looking into the matter, it’s a good reminder for all moms to be vigilant about online privacy, especially when it comes to photos.
What do you think, did this group violate these children’s rights, or do they have the right to free speech?
