It’s never a dull moment when it comes to Mayim Bialik’s parenting, from her breastfeeding her son on a NYC subway, to enforcing veganism at home. Now, the Big Bang Theory star and mother of Miles, 8, and Fred, 5, is back in the spotlight to defend her parenting style, which includes her decision to breastfeed her son Fred until he self-weaned at age 4.
“People laughed and sneered but it wasn’t wrong,” Mayim says to In Touch. “Just because you do something your way doesn’t mean you can judge people who don’t. If I breastfeed and you don’t; it’s OK. I don’t think I’m a better mom and my kids aren’t necessarily better off than yours.”
Mayim says the backlash she has received online has upset her so much it “makes me cry.”
“The way that I parent is the way thousands of women parent all over the world, but I get flak for it,” she adds. “People say really mean things!”
This isn’t the first time the former Blossom star has answered criticism against her “attachment parenting,” especially when it comes to breastfeeding in public. “That’s the way you feed a human baby,” Mayim said earlier this year.
Now, the 38-year-old actress very much understands why so many people get in a snit when it comes to the issue of breastfeeding. “Our culture has a very, very bizarre relationship with breasts,” she previously said to the Huffington Post. “We have a tremendous obsession with sexualizing, absolutely, and breastfeeding is not a sexual act.”
Mayim went on to say, “I think anywhere you give a bottle, you breastfeed. I don’t believe you need to cover up a baby [breastfeeding] any more than you need to cover up a baby drinking a bottle.” Preach girl.
