As a joke gone awry, a girl from Florence, Alabama posted an ad selling her younger brother for $1,200. The problem? Trafficking minors on the Internet is a serious crime — and the ad looked legit to the authorities!

According to The Times Daily, the police department worked for over a week to identify the boy, whose wincing expression was featured in the ad claiming to sell a "12-year-old joyfull [sic] little boy (real) needing a good home, and caring people to be around.” Cops feared the ad was more than a prank. Once the boy was identified, the siblings’ grandmother brought them both into the police station, where they were both let go with a warning.

“She said they were messing around, and she posted the photo and the ad as a joke,” says Florence Detective Keith Johnson. Despite the legal implications, we can hardly blame her — what older sibling hasn’t daydreamed about selling their younger sibling to the highest bidder?

Florence Lt. Mike Holt explains, “We just wanted to make sure the boy was OK. That was our main concern.” He adds, “She said she wouldn’t be putting anything else on Craigslist.”

We doubt she will!
