We know what you’re thinking: There’s no such thing as too much sleep! But according to a recent study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there is. While it’s been said countless times that a lack of Zs can make you unhappy, sick, and, well, tired, the new report (via Business Insider) claims that most Americans are getting too much sleep.
The BLS says she average American over the age of 15 sleeps 8 hours and 43 minutes each night. Weekends get a little lazy, with an average of 9 hours and 21 minutes of mattress time. Youth and seniors sleep more than the typical adult (figures), both coming in around the 9 hour and 20 plus minute mark. Americans age 45 to 54 sleep the least amount, but still manage to get around 8 hours and 26 minutes nightly. There seems to be a fine line between too much and not enough. So how do we walk that line?
According to the the National Sleep Foundation, our sleep needs depend on a variety of factors including age, sex, and previous sleep amounts. The study found, however, that the sweet spot seems to be in the 7- to 8-hour range. Any more or any less and you’re not doing yourself any favors. Another study reported by Business Insider found that sleeping in on the weekend is ineffective, disrupting our body’s internal clock and effectively making us more tired come Monday morning. Hey, that’s why Monday’s are so brutal!
So while it’s tempting to hit that snooze button once or twice (okay, ten times), don’t do it! Think of it as an extra hour to get things done. Go for a jog. Make a nice breakfast for the kiddos. Do the dishes. Or maybe just have a Maxwell House front porch moment. Whatever you do, don’t go back to sleep!
