Turns out it’s not just diet soda that’s bad for you. Women’s Health reports that a new study out of Japan shows a whopping 83% increase in the chance of stroke in women who had about one sugary soda per day. Just one!

The study lasted for 18 years, and shows that even women who curbed their soda intake during the study’s first three to nine years still had an increased risk of stroke. So the soda you drink today, even if you stop years from now, can come back to haunt you in a big way.

The stroke-related problem with soda? Researchers believe it affects your blood vessels negatively in two ways: once with sugar and once with caffeine. This particular combo can cause rapidly accumulating arterial plaque and high blood pressure, both major factors that lead to stroke.

We know it’s delicious, refreshing, and, yes, way more fun than water, but if you believe this study, you might want to stop drinking soda yesterday if you want to lessen your chances of stroke.
