We were terrified this morning reading an Associated Press tweet that stated there were two explosions in the White House and President Obama was injured. We questioned its legitimacy, given it had no link to a story or photographs. We also noticed that the tweet lacked proper AP Style, which is such a dead giveaway. Relief finally came when we saw BuzzFeed’s tweet that the account had been hacked.
Who does this crap? Seriously, people.
Within five minutes, the post was removed, but not after almost 500 people had retweeted the fake news and the DOW dropped over 100 points. The AP Twitter account has since been suspended so the news organization can investigate the hack, and the stock market is back to normal.
