Ben Affleck doesn’t care that he is a multi-award winning actor/writer/and now, director — he doesn’t want his kids to follow in his Hollywood footsteps.
After winning another award for his movie, Argo, at last night’s SAG Awards, Ben told E! Online that he’s wary of the whole celebrity-spawn-turned-child-actor thing. “I would do whatever I could to discourage that,” said Ben, dad to Violet, 7, Seraphina, 4, and Samuel, who will turn 1 on February 27.
Sounds like Ben and wife, Jennifer Garner, know a thing or two about what “the industry” can do to kids. “My kids have enough issues of being exposed in ways that I don’t want them to be exposed, in magazines and shows and stuff,” said Ben. But he’s not trying to quell emerging act bugs altogether. Ben says when his kids get older, theater classes are a totally appropriate way to channel their performance ambitions.
Way to go, Ben and Jen, for having the right idea — kids should be kids and not media fodder. So Ben’s a little protective of his kids. We would be too if we were chased through the park every time we took the kids for a playdate!
And while his kids won’t be walking the red carpet with him anytime soon, Ben has started a cute tradition that allows him to have the kids with him in spirit at each award show he attends. As he proudly displayed at the Critics Choice Movie Awards in early January, Ben lets his kids write little messages on his hand. It’s too cute! A proud, protective, hands-on dad, who is handsome to boot! Darn Jen, how’d you get so lucky?
