Residents of Raleigh, N.C., are saddened and confused over an attempted double murder involving a husband and wife and their mutual best friend, WNCT reports. Jonathan Broyhill, the couple’s best man at their wedding, has been identified as the suspect who is accused of fatally stabbing Jamie Hahn and injuring her husband Nation Hahn in their home Monday evening. Nation was treated and released while Jaime clung to life at WakeMed hospital until Wednesday morning when she passed away.

“We lost a beautiful and loving wife, daughter, and friend,” the family said in a statement released early Wednesday morning. “We all lost a pure and brave spirit."

Nation later tweeted this heartfelt admission: “I have no idea what I am going to do without @jamiehahn. She was my center, my rock and my soulmate.”

Jamie was the founder Blue Sky Strategies, a fundraising firm for politics and nonprofits. She also contributed to several political campaigns for politicians such as John Edwards, former U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, and former U.S. Senate candidate Ken Lewis. She and her husband were considered up-and-comers in the Democratic party as the pair, as well as their close friend Jonathan, were all democratic political strategists.

Jonathan is being treated at WakeMed for self-inflicted injuries, WNCT reports, and he has already been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. The police report that they fully intend to upgrade the charges to murder.

News Observer notes that around 2010, Jonathan was working for Blue Sky Strategies with Jamie and Nation doing fundraising for Former Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, and was considered the main person with access to the fundraising software.

“Some of the things that Jon said about the campaign finances were inconsistent with other information,” Miller said Wednesday. “It’s probably the case that Jamie was asking questions on behalf of the campaign about campaign finances. I think it’s bound to be part of the investigation of Jon’s motive.”
