Courtney Jarrell, a 22-year-old former math teacher and girls basketball coach in Utah, has been accused of raping a female student.
The 17 -year-old victim is a student at Riverton High School, where Jarrell had been teaching eighth-grade math and coaching the sophomore girl’s basketball team for only eight months. Jarrell has been charged with two felonies: object rape, which is a first degree felony, and forcible sexual abuse, a second degree felony. The Deseret News reports that charging documents allege that Jarrell had “illegal sexual activity” with the girl at her residence between February and March 2013.
The allegations first surfaced about a month ago, when Jarrell was placed on administrative leave, and the teacher has now resigned from the school.
Kathryn Orchard, a student at the school, shared her shock and disbelief, saying that “everybody loved her.” This was Jarrell’s first teaching position.
Jarrell is scheduled to appear in court May 16. So far, no other victims have come forward.
