We can hardly believe that the beautiful and talented Elizabeth Banks could ever be at the root of any parental outrage, but it turns out that a single comment she recently made to People is sending parents everywhere into an unintentional tizzy.

“Two is very different from one,” Elizabeth tells People of managing her family after the arrival of her newest son, Magnus Mitchell Handelman. “When you have one kid, you feel like you can jet set around and you can throw him on the hip and you get your life done.

“You don’t realize how easy one is until you have two. Now I’m really a mom. Oh, I am a mom now! This is for serious — I am responsible for two people now.”

Elizabeth welcomed Magnus last November with her husband Max Handelman and older son Felix, then 20 months. Both boys were conceived using a gestational surrogate and their loving parents have been doing their best to raise the boys with as little help as possible, noting the exceptional difficulty during the holidays.

“[We] had no help, no nannies, no babysitters. It was crazy. You forget how difficult it is to wake up in the middle of the night, how exhausting it is,” she says.

Parents of single children are crying foul at Elizabeth’s comment that they believe suggests that parenting one child is a walk in the park, or not really parenting at all.

“The fact is, having two kids can be difficult,” writer Lindsay Cross told PolicyMic. “Having a single child with special needs can be difficult. Raising a child as a single mom with a minimum wage job can be difficult. None of that makes someone 'more of a mother' than anyone else. Suggesting that just shows a lack of thought or compassion for other people and what they're going through. I don't think that Banks meant to be offensive. I just think that it was a pretty dumb and near-sighted comment to make."

While Jezebel writer Laura Beck also believes Elizabeth didn’t mean to judge parents of one children, writing, “I don't think she was casting aspersions on the second-class mothers of blighted single babies, I think she was just being funny when talking about the difficulties of two kids."
