In a case of no good deed goes unpunished, a 64-year-old Welsh grandfather directed a shark away from children swimming on shores of an Australian beach — and he was promptly fired from his job for it! Once the video of Paul Marshallsea’s heroic act went viral and his bosses at a children’s charity saw him on the beach in Australia, they decided to let him go.
Apparently Paul had been on sick leave from work due to stress and his bosses felt that a vacation in Australia wasn’t exactly stress reducing. Despite vacationing under his doctor’s orders to get away, the termination letter that Paul received from his job said:
Whilst unfit to work you were well enough to travel to Australia. And, according to recent news footage of yourself in Queensland, you allegedly grabbed a shark by the tail and narrowly missed being bitten by quickly jumping out of the way.
The video clearly shows Paul reaching into the water and, from what we can tell, pushing the shark away from shore, and then jumping out of the way to avoid getting bitten.
It is quite possible that Paul was just wading in the water, trying to get that stress down, but unfortunately it seems that his bosses would have preferred to believe he was laid up at home, nursing his stress.
Regardless of the situation, we can’t even imagine facing a shark with our bare hands, and for that we think Paul is very brave!
