Occasionally there’s a breakthrough in the scientific world that’s so cutting edge, so ahead of it’s time, that it must be brought to the public as soon as possible. And while we’re not talking about a cure for the common cold, we are talking about something incredibly useful. Hold on to your highlights moms, because scientists may have found a way to eliminate gray hair.

According to a new European study — where we think they know a thing or two about hair —scientists may have discovered a way to banish the gray. It turns out that they key is to eliminate the symptoms instead of the cause.

Here’s the gist of it according to research recently published in The FASEB Journal: Gray hair is thought to be caused by an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the roots of hair follicles, which causes harmful oxidative stress. The same phenomenon is also linked to a skin condition called vitiligo, which leads to patchy pigmentation in skin and can cause eyelashes to turn white. While finding a new method to treat vitiligo in approximately 2,400 subjects, researchers stumbled upon the ability to halt the process of graying hair.

"For generations, numerous remedies have been concocted to hide gray hair," Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, said. "But now, for the first time, an actual treatment that gets to the root of the problem has been developed." Root! Get it? Oh Dr. Weissman, you’re such a riot.

So far there’s been no mention of when the treatment will be available to the public, but we can hardly wait!
