Think you have the perfect name picked out for you newborn? You might not be so sure after you check out Nametrix: Doctor or Dancer? Nametrix is a new free iOS app on iTunes that uses public data to tell you all sorts of things about your chosen name, including the popularity of the name over time, the most popular professions of people with the same name, and whether people with that name lean Republican or Democrat.

For instance, the name Julian is popular with surgeons and Republicans; while Riley, an adorable unisex name, is common for Republicans and, um, porn stars, as The Stir notes. What are amongst the most popular names for gangsters? Vito and Salvatore, of course. On the other hand, Isabellas are commonly poets, models, or actresses.

It’s interesting stuff if you aren’t tied to a family name, because lord knows, you might want to give your kids as much of an advantage of not becoming a porn star or gangster as possible…or a Democrat or Republican, for that matter, depending on your political bent!
