Yet another reason us Mamas should strive to be as zenned out as possible.

The National Library of Medicine reports a new study showing that exposure to high levels of stress makes girls more likely have disruptions in their brain function, causing anxiety and depression later on in life.

The study linked elevated cortisol levels — a hormone spiked by stressful environments — to a lack of effective wiring in girls’ brains. Moreover, female babies born into stress, even if that stress subsided, still reflected elevated cortisol levels as preschoolers. So even if the stress passes, the exposure to it during very early childhood has lasting effects on girls’ brain development and function.

Worth noting, researchers found that boys don’t seem to have the same problem.
