Melissa McCarthy is hilarious. We could literally watch her just hanging out at home with her daughters, Vivian, 5 and Georgette, 2, doing absolutely nothing, and it would still be one of the funniest things we’d watch all year. That’s because Melissa has true comedic talent. At least according to us.
But if you check out movie reviewer Rex Reed’s comments about Melissa in her new movie, Identity Thief, with funnyman Jason Bateman, you’d get a very different story. In his review, Rex calls Melissa “tractor-sized,” and “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.” Ouch — and shut up!
As far as we — and the Oscars — are concerned, girlfriend stole the show in Bridesmaids, and it had nothing to do with her size. Melissa’s character was socially inept ([Upon farting] “I’m sorry. I won’t apologize. I’m not confident which end that came out of,”) sex-crazed (“I’m glad he’s single, cause I’m going to climb that like a tree,”), and way too smart for her own good, (“I have the highest possible security clearance. Don’t repeat that! I can’t protect you.”)
It’s not like Melissa promotes being unhealthy. Melissa told Good Housekeeping (via The Daily Mail), “Sometimes I wish I were just magically a size 6 and I never had to give it a single thought. But I am weirdly healthy, so I don’t beat myself up about it—it wouldn’t help, and I don’t want to pass that on to my girls.”
An Oscar-nominated star who is thoughtful, well spoken, a great mom, and totally hilarious? Yeah, Rex, you’re right, she’s the worst!
