Most of us want to let our kids indulge this time of year — after all, Halloween is as much about candy as it is pumpkin carving and scary movies. Unfortunately there’s a lot of trick in these treats: Shape reports that there’s plenty of scariness lurking on the ingredient labels for common Halloween candies. Here are the ingredients you and your kids should avoid:
High Fructose Corn Syrup
We all know sweets aren’t the best for you, but load up on high fructose corn syrup, a corn-derived sweetener, and you could damage your kidneys and cause liver disease. (Of course, we’re talking about large doses here, peeps.) Check candy labels closely and stick with those sweetened with cane sugar or honey.
Who doesn’t love candy corn? (Um, WE DO!) But all that orange dye can really do a number on your system. In fact, research shows links between large amounts of food coloring and behavioral issues, asthma, and cancer. Shape even reports that during Halloween in 1950, many children became ill from ingesting Orange #1, which was eventually banned. Moral of the story: Brightly colored candy isn’t a bright idea.
Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil
This highly-processed milk fat alternative is loaded with saturated fat — a whopping 80 percent! What does that mean? A serious spike in LDL cholesterol (the bad kind). An easy way to avoid Frankenstein-like additives is to make your own Halloween candy!
