When Brazilian mother-to-be Layane Santos, 19, was rushed to the hospital in Sao Paulo due to abdominal pain and blood loss, she never would have imagined she’d wake up to learn that she was never pregnant at all.

At least, that’s what the doctors at Santa Casa de Maua told Layane, reports The Sun. Doctors performing the delivery claim they found no child in her womb and believe her pregnancy to have been completely psychological.

It might sound a little far-fetched, but psychological pregnancies do exist. According to Sylvia Cavalcanti from the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, these “pregnancies” happen when a woman “has an overwhelming desire to have a child. This can cause the cessation of menstruation due to hormonal changes. She will feel nausea, vomiting, in fact everything she has read about a normal pregnancy.”

But Layane knows she was pregnant. She even had ultrasounds that show her 7-pound baby girl who Layane and her husband, Lourival Alves, had named Sofia, as proof. So what happened to the child between delivery and waking up from the C-section?

Lourival recalls, “The doctor showed me the empty womb and said that there wasn’t any baby. That the pregnancy had been psychological.” Given that he wasn’t called to the hospital for the delivery, as Layane had requested, he was only able to see things after the fact.

“I think they stole the baby, or the baby died while she was being delivered and they didn’t want to tell us what happened. There’s no way she could have just vanished from one moment to the next,” said Layane.

Fortunately, there were tests performed by the hospital before the delivery, so the couple’s lawyers are requesting those. Furthermore, Layane prenatal doctor is offering to be a witness if she decides to take legal action against the hospital.
