There is horrific news out of France, where a woman’s body has been devoured by vultures after the 52-year-old fell almost 1,000 feet off a cliff to her death while hiking with friends. Officials say that the woman died from the fall.
“There were only bones, clothes and shoes left on the ground,” Major Didier Pericou told the Times of London. “They took 45 to 50 minutes to eat the body.”
The animals in question, Griffon Vultures, are a protected species. In the 1960s, there were about 60 couples of the birds, and now there are upwards of 800 couples. The birds regularly eat dead animal carcasses, but local breeders are now required by European health and safety regulations to burn their carcasses. Locals maintain that since the vultures’ diets have been stripped, they have become ravenous.
