Most charity events are accustomed to raising funds, not having them ingested.

The Tampa Woman's Club charity has been playing a fun game for years. For $20, participants buy a flute of champagne, and a chance to win a one-carat, $5,000 diamond. Organizers place cubic zirconia stones in the bottom of 399 of the 400 champagne glasses. The prized diamond is placed in the last.

80-year-old Miriam Tucker told local media that she didn't want to put her finger in her glass. She took a few sips of her champagne while talking with friends. Then she realized that she had swallowed the jewel.

To quote Miriam, "What a dumb thing."

Meanwhile, event organizers Joy Pierson and Andy Meyer — who happen to be jewelers — were puzzled that no one had come forward with the diamond. Pierson said, "We knew the winner had to be at one of two tables."

Eventually, Tucker confessed what she had done. "She said she swallowed what was in her glass," Pierson said. Tucker immediately went to the hospital for an X-ray. The diamond didn't show up, but luckily Tucker already had a colonoscopy scheduled for Monday. Dr. Bruce Edgerton retrieved the diamond. After the procedure, Tucker and her daughter went to a jewelry store and had it cleaned (ew) and verified.

"It's an amazing story," said Tucker. She plans to bequeath the stone to her 13-year-old granddaughter, and she says the diamond will "stay in the family with a story to go with it."

We’ll say!
