Work up a sweat? We understand — sometimes you just don’t have a moment to spare for luxuries like a shower, but that doesn’t mean you can’t challenge yourself with a great workout. There are plenty of workouts that will get your muscles burning, but leave your Lululemons dry. Try these three:
Ballet Barre-Style Workouts
Whether it’s Barre3, The Bar Method, Pure Barre, or The Dailey Method, plié-ing and stretching at the ballet barre like you’re auditioning for Black Swan 2 has never been trendier. This muscle-shaking (what some of the studios call “quaking”) workout incorporates traditional ballet moves with touches of pilates and yoga for a super intense, total body toning session. And since you’re focusing on the muscles rather than doing tons of cardio, sweating is a non-issue. Bonus: A few of the studios, which have locations across the country, offer child care. Extra bonus: Several of the studios offer online barre workouts so you can tone up at home.
The best part about pilates on the reformer? You’re working your legs, arms, and core while lying or sitting down on a cushy surface (called the carriage) — the entire time. But this isn’t nap time! Using multiple color-coded springs to provide resistance, plus arm and leg straps and a foot bar, reformer exercises work to increase strength and flexibility. Breaking a sweat is not the reformer’s m.o., so you can finish your workout and go on with your day. Look for pilates studios that offer group equipment classes or a reformer series.
Forget hot yoga or even power yoga, you can still sculpt your muscles and gain greater flexibility and balance with a less intense version (think Hatha, Iyengar, or Kripalu). Because you’re focusing on holding poses for longer periods of time, rather than blasting through them for a cardio burst, you’re more likely to feel a sense of calm and restoration. Plus, several varieties of “gentle yoga” also place an emphasis on meditation, chanting, and relaxation. And who couldn’t use more of that?!
