We knew someone was going down in the Season 5 summer finale, and the writers weren't kidding when they said the offed character was a big one. In fact, it was none other than Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish). That's right: the original "A" is gone. What happened?!
Well, the Liars turned to Mona for help this week, realizing that with Alison (Sasha Pieterse) going to the cops, and they needed to know her plan. Mona was happy to help, getting the Liars Ali's confession, and then helping them break into Radley to figure out how Bethany was connected to Alison.
It turns out Mona figured out a lot. Mrs. D was having an affair with Bethany's dad, and Ali was the one who lured Bethany to Rosewood. By the end of the episode, Mona was convinced that she'd proven Ali is "A," even saying triumphantly into her mirror that she finally won. But she spoke too soon: "A" snuck into her house, delivering a fatal blow and then stealing away her dead body.
Oh, and in case somehow you had any doubt after seeing her corpse: Yes, this death is for real. At the end of the episode, “A” replaced Emily’s baby Jesus doll with a Mona doll in her front yard’s nativity scene. And when “A” opened the trunk to stash the baby Jesus, we saw Mona’s cold, dead body staring back at us. Cue the nightmares!
It looks like there’s no coming back from the dead for Mona. We'll miss her.
