Mother Defends Son’s KKK Halloween Costume, Says It’s “Tradition”

We know you’ve probably seen your share of inappropriate and poorly planned Halloween costumes — Julianne Hough as Crazy Eyes from Orange is the New Black and the Boston Marathon girl come to mind — but this one might be the scariest of all.

According to the WHSV Virginia, Jessica Black, a mother from Craigsville, Virginia, told the TV news outlet that she let her 7-year-old son Jackson wear the hooded uniform of the white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan for the most innocent of reasons. You see, in her family, donning the costume for Halloween is a family tradition. Sort of like racism.

Jessica told WHSV that she warned her son that some might not embrace his choice of Halloween garb. She went on to defend the KKK’s philosophy, adding that there’s a chapter of the group right in Craigsville. “It's supposed to be white with white, black with black, man with woman” she said. She also told WHSV that the local KKK has given a lot of money to the nearby St. Jude’s hospital. Well, we guess it’s all OK then!

When WHSV asked Jackson Black why he wanted to wear the costume in the first place, he clearly didn’t really understand the ramifications, saying, “It’s cool.” His mom added that when her brother wore the costume growing up, “nobody made a big deal out of it.”

Meanwhile, the Blacks' neighbors say they were “shocked” to see the boy trick or treating in the outfit. While we can't condone the mom’s actions at all, we can’t help wondering how much candy this guy ended up with.
