A mother in Florida is wanted on federal and state charges, including kidnapping her own two-year-old daughter, in an elaborate anti-vaccination protest.
According to the New York Daily News, authorities believe that Megan Everett, 22, took her 2-year-old daughter Lilly out of state in mid-May, fleeing her home in Sunrise, Florida. Officials say she left a disturbing note behind.
The note expressed worry that Lilly’s father, Robert Bauman, with whom Megan shares custody of their daughter, would “vaccinate and brainwash” the child.
According to court documents, Megan has been heavily influenced by her boyfriend, Carlos Lesters, a known conspiracy theorist and gun advocate. She told Robert that she planned to homeschool Lilly, educating her in “the ways of the Southern Confederacy.”
Lilly’s father told the Sun Sentinel, “She didn't want Lilly to learn about black history. She just wanted her to learn about the Confederacy."
Authorities say Megan may have fled the state wearing a disguise. According to the FBI, she could be hiding with her boyfriend’s family in Virginia or Georgia. Carlos told the court he has no idea where the mother and daughter went.
Robert is distraught about the safety of his daughter, telling NBC Miami, “I fear for her safety,” adding, “I just want her to come home safe.”
