Pretty Little Liars Movie in the Works? Marlene King Wants to Bring It to the Big Screen!

There have long been rumblings about the potential for a Pretty Little Liars movie, but this is the first we’ve heard about executive producer Marlene King’s clarifications that she would want the film to be made for theaters, rather than TV. Where do we buy our ticket?

"That's always been the ultimate goal, is that it ends its life in one medium and starts another life on film. I love that,” Marlene told E! Online. “Oh we want an in-theaters film! Big, big, big opening weekend, with all those Pretty Little Liars fans are coming out. It would be so much fun. And we'd get to do so much like big stuff too.”

Sounds good to us. We would love to see what kind of story PLL could tell on the big screen. After all, it is a show that has always drawn much of its inspiration from the silver screen — from Hitchcock-inspired episodes to the black-and-white Season 4 ep that looked straight out of the film noir. Marlene also started her career writing in film, so she’s no stranger to the medium. Among the films she’s penned: cult coming-of-age flick Now and Then (which shares many themes in common with Pretty Little Liars) and the Lindsay Lohan/Chris Pine rom com Just My Luck.

Television shows that continue on in film isn’t without precedent either, of course — the most recent example being Veronica Mars. The teen detective drama was off the air for seven years before continuing its story in a 2014 film funded partially by a Kickstarter campaign. Unlike Veronica Mars, we think PLL has a large enough following to warrant support from a studio. It continues to be one of ABC Family’s most-watched shows and tops the list of the most-tweeted about episodes of TV ever.

What we’re saying: we think PLL could make a smooth jump from the “small” screen to the “big” screen. We’d love to see what kinds of stakes “A” could rustle up when given that scale — Marlene, too.

Do you think PLL would make a good movie? Sound off in the comments below!
