UPDATE (12/20/13): It's official! Marvel confirmed that Paul Rudd will star in Ant-Man, which already has a release date of July 31, 2015.
As Marvel said in a statement (via Entertainment Weekly), "When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.”
The plot of the movie is still being kept "under wraps," so we'll have to stay tuned for details. There's certainly plenty of time!
Anchorman 2 Paul Rudd may be "reporting" to the Marvelverse to "anchor" the superhero franchise Ant-Man. (Yeesh — we'll stop.)
Variety reports that the 44-year-old actor is in "early negotiations" to star in the 2015 movie, which will be the first film in "Phase Three" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
FYI, Phase Two kicked off this May with the release of Iron Man 3, continued with November's Thor: The Dark World, and will extend to April's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and August's Guardians of the Galaxy, before culminating with May 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In comic books, Ant-Man is the alter-ego of Henry Pym, a scientist who discovers the power to shrink to the size of an insect and to communicate with the creepy-crawlers.
The film will be directed by Edgar Wright (The World's End) and written by Joe Cornish (The Adventures of Tintin).
As Variety notes, this action-heavy role would be an uncharacteristic choice for Paul, who has mostly taken comedic gigs in films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Admission, and This is 40.
We're all for the choice, but what do you think? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
