As star, producer, and recently-named director, Elizabeth Banks is pulling triple-duty for Pitch Perfect 2 — the sequel to the hit 2012 a cappella comedy — but it sounds like she's ready for the challenge!
The first film — which introduced us to Beca, Aubrey, Fat Amy, and the rest of the Barden Bellas — earned widespread acclaim and nearly $100 million in profit. So Elizabeth shouldn't be feeling any pressure, right?
In this Wetpaint Entertainment exclusive, we ask the 40-year-old star about the jump behind the camera.
"I'm really excited!" she enthuses. "I was an on-set producer on the first film, and I've been with the concept since its inception. And I'm taking on a lot more responsibility this time around. But I'm very excited to herald the next installment."
So what hopes does she have for the sequel to the hit movie? "Oh, geez. Low expectations, my friend. [Laughs.] I just want to try and provide as much joyfulness and laughter and humor and empowerment as the first film."
Elizabeth can't reveal much about the storyline for the second go-round, especially since returning screenwriter Kay Cannon is still hard at work on the script. "I think that what I can say is that the women — they'll all be seniors graduating from college this time."
She's also hard-pressed to name her her favorite character or moment: "Yeah, that's a dangerous question," she warns, laughing. "It's like choosing children. You're giving me Sophie's Choice here … Obviously the Bellas' finale is really emotional. I just remember, I was really emotional the day that we shot it, and seeing it all come together on set for me was one of the highlights."
Now, with Pitch Perfect 2, it seems like Elizabeth just wants to do justice to the world of a cappella: "These guys, they get to be rock stars in their lives for a little bit. I think everybody has a similar dream — whether its being a rock star or something [else] — but to just be amazing at something. [A cappella troupes] are basically sororities and fraternities that you join for life, and that's one of the things that I think I admire the most about it. It's a group of people who coming together to do something that they love."
Same could be said for the Pitch Perfect 2 production, we're sure — and we can't wait to see the result!
