In the ten years since its initial release, The Notebook has pretty much become the quintessential love story. And yeah, it’s a pretty romantic movie — but the fact that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams played the characters who brought the Nicholas Sparks book to life have a lot to do with the film’s success.
Because really, could you imagine anyone besides Rachel playing Allie? We can’t, but that’s exactly what almost happened. In a recent interview with the movie’s director, Nick Cassavetes, to commemorate The Notebook’s tenth anniversary, Nick reveals that Ryan and Rachel were off to a rocky start when they first met.
“Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not,” Nick tells VH1. “And Ryan came to me, and there's 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, 'Nick come here.' And he's doing a scene with Rachel and he says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?' I said, 'What?' He says, 'I can't. I can't do it with her. I'm just not getting anything from this."
Fortunately, though, Ryan did eventually get something out of Rachel, and it ended up creating one of the most talked about movies ever. The two actors finally had a breakthrough when they got their anger out in a no holds barred screaming match, and by the time their argument was over with, they were refreshed and ready to make movie magic.
“I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open,” Nick says.
And, as we all know, the chemistry was so alive between these two that they later went on to date for a long time — and their breakup still makes us sad every time we think about it. But some things in this world just don’t make sense, right? Oh, the beautiful children that could’ve been.
Are you surprised that Ryan and Rachel didn’t always get along?
