2014 MTV Video Music Awards Are Going Back to Cali — Get All the Details (VIDEO)

The VMAs are going back to Cali! MTV announced on Wednesday that the 2014 Video Music Awards are headed back to California on Sunday, August 24, after last year’s Brooklyn-based telecast. But whether or not anything will be able to top Miley Cyrus’ much talked about controversial performance remains to be seen. (Are Bey and Jay available?)

The move not only marks the moonman’s return to the West Coast, but also makes it the first major awards show to be held at the newly revamped venue The Forum in Inglewood, California.

“With its incomparable legacy as a world class music venue, the Forum is one of Southern California’s most iconic entertainment landmarks,” said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV, in a statement from the network. “The Forum has hosted some of the most legendary musical artists and performances ever seen and we can’t wait to add the 2014 Video Music Awards to this list and create the type of memorable moments that music fans will talk about for years to come.”

Viewer interest in the 2013 Brooklyn-based ceremony was high after boyband *NSYNC were rumored to be reuniting in honor of Justin Timberlake's Video Vanguard award. And the boyband did take to the stage — even if it was only for two minutes — to join JT on stage after he performed a solo medley of his hits. According to MTV, the 2013 Video Music Awards generated 120 national and worldwide trending topics on Twitter, and 1.2 million Instagram likes.

But the most memorable moment of the telecast — which will surely be hard to top this year — was Miley Cyrus’ highly maligned performance with Robin Thicke. Miley and Robin’s controversial performance set a new Twitter record, bringing in 306k tweets per minute, most of which were shocked reactions to Miley’s risque on-stage behavior.

Something tells us Lorde won’t be bringing her teddy bears to the VMA stage this year. She will, however, bring her dip-dyed fingers to the show.

Do you think the VMAs are making the right move by going back to Cali? Catch the 2014 Video Music Awards on Sunday, August 24 on MTV.
