Backstreet’s back, alright! One of the entertainment industry’s most popular boy bands has staged a reunion — 20 years after their 1993 debut — with a new song “Show 'Em (What You’re Made Of).”
The boys — that’s Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, A.J. McLean, and Kevin Richardson, in case your commemorative Backstreet tattoo is currently covered up — prove they can still harmonize with the best of them in their latest video.
We begin with fire. Then, as the flames fade, a shirtless A.J. McLean, now 35, starts crooning as we flash to images of each Backstreet Boy standing alone against a black background (Kevin Richardson, you haven’t aged a day).
During the four-minute video, there’s a lot of reaching up to the sky and displaying of wedding rings, a definite departure from the group’s bachelor days of synchronized dancing. Ah well, all good things must come to an end.
Not that we’re saying “Show 'Em” isn’t good, of course. It’s just...different. We love seeing the old band get back together but listening to a group of 30-something men sing about finding “the truth in a child’s eyes” doesn’t have quite the same pop music magic as say the coordinated white outfit glory of “I Want It That Way.”
Then again, we do love us some Backstreet so keep the hits a-comin', boys. We’re glad you’re back.
