Nickelodeon star-turned-pop diva Ariana Grande, who's been dubbed "Baby Mariah Carey" by fans and critics alike, had big shoes to fill tonight at the American Music Awards on November 24, 2013 — and it's safe to say that she prevailed. The 20-year-old starlet sang "Tattooed Heart" from her debut album Yours Truly and brought the audience — including Lady Gaga — to their feet.

Unlike many of her fellow entertainers (we're lookin' at you, Katy Perry), Ariana didn't rely on crazy staging, costumes, or dancers — she stood behind the microphone from start to finish in a glittery, floor-length Dolce and Gabbana gown, allowing her vocals to take center stage and soar. Her only on-stage accompaniment was a row of doo-wop singers, snapping their fingers along to the stunning melody behind her.

Though her performance lacked her much-hyped whistle register, the Sam & Cat actress hit all the right notes and runs, proving that she's got one of the most impressive vocal ranges in pop music today.
