When you’re coming off of a monster summer like Lorde had with her hit single “Royals,” it can be pretty daunting to follow that act. But it’s full steam ahead for the New Zealand-born pop star, who just released the new video for her second single, “Team,” a dystopian, post-apocalyptic masterpiece that crashed video site Vevo in it’s first few hours.
While “Royals” is still sitting pretty near the top of the Billboard charts, there’s plenty of room for “Team,” a tune that will quickly have you nodding along to its Timbaland-esque beats and thought-provoking lyrics. So how do you make a video that will match these darker themes? By using inspiration from dreams, of course.
“This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world,” Lorde wrote on her Facebook. “A world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn't need to be passed in order to be allowed in: Sometimes the person who loses is stronger.”
What results is a visually stunning mini-film, with a gaggle of teens scaling the ruins of a city and jousting on motorbikes. See? That dream journal you always wanted to start can actually prove useful. Next time you dream that your teeth fall out while you’re in the middle of your high school cafeteria .. oh, your boyfriend’s mom is there, write that stuff down — there might be something there.
