Is there any better way to celebrate Friday than by listening to wunderkind Kendrick Lamar cover Tupac’s “California Love”? Nope. We didn’t think so.

The 26-year-old Compton rapper opened up the first-ever iHeartRadio Music Awards on Thursday night (April 1) with a rousing performance of Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre's timeless ode to the Golden State. The song hold a special place in Kendrick’s heart for many reasons, but mainly because he was on set for the “California Love” music video when he was just 7 years old! Talk about street cred.

The Grammy-nominated rapper also performed his single m.A.A.d city for the crowd, and everyone was feeling it — from RiRi to Blake Shelton! Check out the video below.

What did you think of Kendrick’s cover of “California Love?” Do you think he honored Tupac’s legacy? Sound off in the comments!
