Hear that? That was the sound of another celebrity feud getting fired up, and this time, it’s between Drake and Macklemore, two rappers who at the top of their game. But is there enough room for both of them in the music industry?
Drake didn’t just host last night’s ESPY Awards on ESPN — he also performed on the show. And when the 27-year-old “Hold On, We’re Going Home” singer took the stage to perform his song, “Honorable Mention,” he took the opportunity to cast some serious shade on Macklemore.
The song itself is about people who were almost number one, but never quite got there… and the lyrics lent themselves to a moment that ended up being pretty awkward.
As originally reported by Us Weekly, as Drake rapped the lyrics, “Real talent doesn’t always win championships, like real music doesn’t always win Grammys,” as a photo of the “Thrift Shop” singer holding a Grammy flashed on the screen behind him.
Predictably, the audience went crazy — and we’re a little surprised Macklemore hasn’t had anything to say about what happened just yet. He took home the award for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammys, and it seems as though Drake, who was also nominated, was less than impressed with the academy voters’ choice.
