In case you didn’t catch the 2014 Billboard Music Awards, the only thing you need to know is that 17-year-old Lorde stole the show both on air and on social media. Not only did the singer take home two Billboard awards — for Top New Artist and Best Rock Song (“Royals”) — but she gave a killer performance of her new single, “Tennis Court.”
This was the first time Lorde performed the track on prime time, and in honor of the milestone, she was decked out in her signature look — all black everything. To add flair to her full look, it seemed as if Lorde took a cue from Pharrell Williams and his Arby’s-esque Vivienne Westwood hat, and wore a black topper that could fall in either the safari or witch-chic categories.
Either way, girlfriend rocked her performance, complete with her spastic arm movements that we’ve all come to love. In fact, her entire performance created a big buzz on social media. According to Mashable, Lorde was the top mentioned celebrity on Twitter, garnering 662,236 mentions during the awards show. She even beat out Michael Jackson and the hologrammed moonwalking segment!
Not bad for Grammy Award winner! Then again, this girl should be use to breaking records by now. When her hit single “Royals” debuted in 2013, it snagged the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. As if that wasn’t enough, Lorde quickly became the youngest singer (at the time she was 16) to sit at the top of the Hot 100 since 1987 according to Billboard. No big deal, right?
Congratulations on the wins, Lorde!
