Joey Fatone is graduating from former boy bander to serious actor!

The NSYNC alum returns to the big screen this week for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the sequel to the 2002 hit in which he also starred.

But while his character Angelo was mostly comic relief in the first film, the second allows the Dancing With the Stars alum to stretch his acting legs a bit as he takes on his first gay role.

“It’s a tough thing to talk to your family about, so many people you’ve known for so many years,” Joey tells Wetpaint of taking on Angelo’s coming-out journey.

To prepare for filming, the 39-year-old turned to friends in the LGBT community, such as former bandmate Lance Bass, to be sure he was best portraying the experience on-screen.

So has this more dramatic part inspired the funny guy to pursue more serious projects in the future? Maybe not, but he’s got definitely going out of his comfort zone with the sci-fi Western, boy-band-filled movie Dead 7!
