Ian Somerhalder: “My Heart Aches For You” — Who’s He Talking About?

Ian Somerhalder has a big, compassionate heart. Who was the Vampire Diaries star expressing his empathy towards this past weekend? Read on to find out!

“Wishing the mothers of #BringBackOurGirls their truest wish, and their only wish I'm sure, my heart aches for you. Xo,” Ian tweeted yesterday, aka Mother’s Day. The message was directed towards the mothers of the 276 girls who were abducted from a school in northeastern Nigeria while taking a physics test. The abduction was the work of Boko Haram, a Nigerian rebel group fighting for an Islamist state and inspired a Twitter campaign using the hashtag “#BringBackOurGirls” when their April 14 abduction initially received little international media attention. Though some of the girls have managed to escape, more than 200 girls still remain prisoners.

Ian isn’t the only celebrity throwing his or her considerable Twitter presence behind the “#BringBackOurGirls” global media campaign. Among those who have taken to Twitter to show their support: Amy Poehler, Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafzai, Alex Chung, David Cameron, and Leona Lewis. The campaign has garnered some criticism, with critics arguing social media has little effect on the real world decision-making that will or will not rescue these girls, while others argue that the campaign increases the pressure on those decision-makers.

Ian also took some time out on Mother’s Day to give a shout out to the rest of the mothers in the world — because this actor has no shortage of love: “Wishing every mother the knowing that she is not only loved by her children but by all of humanity. Cherish your Mom;) Happy Mothers Day!” Ian also tweeted yesterday. Basically, Ian loves all of the mothers.

Do you think the #BringBackOurGirls Twitter campaign is helping? Sound off in the comments below!
